About The Dari Project
Mission
The Dari Project develops resources to increase awareness and acceptance in Korean American communities of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) people of Korean descent. By documenting and sharing the life stories of LGBTQ people and their families and friends, we seek to build bridges among Korean American families, social networks, institutions and faith communities.
What We Do
Dari is an all-volunteer, grassroots effort that was created with the goal of creating two resources: 1) a collection of personal testimonials and art compiling the experiences of LGBTQ people of Korean descent and 2) a website where those stories can be shared and disseminated. We intend to translate these resources into both English and Korean.
The project will represent multiple experiences and stories, ranging from homo/bi/transphobia in Korean American communities, coming out as an LGBTQ person, building relationships with family, and membership in faith communities.
Our name, Dari (다리), means both “bridge” and “legs” in Korean, and symbolizes our wish to build ties within and among our communities.
